Adopting Limon

Limon is a community of people who live just outside of Choluteca Honduras that was started in 1999 in the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch. Like hundreds of other cities in the world, many of the poorest people in the city live very close to rivers to have easy access to water for drinking, cooking, bathing and other cleaning needs.

When Hurricane Mitch dumped more than 20 inches of rain on Honduras in November of 2008, the rivers flooded to such a magnitude that 90% of the bridges in the country were destroyed or severely damaged and entire communities of people living along the rivers were wiped away by rampaging flood waters. The Honduran government had very limited resources to assist the people impacted by this disaster and the only assistance they could offer was to pick up everyone who used to live along the river and drop them off on some higher ground that was nothing more than a scrub brush infested field. The people were living in tarp tents and whatever else they could find to create some sort of shelter.

Samaritan’s Purse partnered with Great Commision of Latin America and few other international relief agencies to create a planned community of cement block home and basic infrastructure of electricity, running water and drainage ditches. This was a great start but now this new community needs assistance in its public schools, childcare, healthcare, job creation and community development through events that promote family unity and fun and community identity.

Beyond Our Walls Inc with a group of partners has adopted the community of Limon and is sending mission teams targeted to each of these specific purposes to Choluteca Honduras to help develop these vital pieces of the community.

Please come join us in transforming this community into a place where families want to live because it offers the best opportunities for education, child care, healthcare and economic prosperity and the chance to be a part of a community of people look out for each other and help a neighbor in need.
